Krabi: Railay Full-Day Rock Climbing Experience
Read about our thrilling adventure rock climbing at Railay, a stunning peninsula in Thailand renowned for its world-class climbing opportunities for all levels. The craggy limestone formations at Railay present a diverse range of routes, from beginner-friendly ascents to challenging overhangs that will put experienced climbers to the test.
THAILAND: KRABI
Having completed lots of indoor rock climbing walls before we were excited to try a full-day rock climbing experience at Railay on real cliffs outdoors!
We booked a full-day climbing experience with Real Rocks Climbing School through Tripadvisor which included all equipment and insurance.
Mum and Dad had told us how awesome the limestone cliffs here were but it wasn't until we saw them ourselves that we realised how high and impressive they really were!
As we were already staying at Railay, we met our Instructor at the pier and he led us to the corner of Railay East Beach and started explaining all we needed to know to have a successful day.
We were measured up for helmets, shoes and harnesses and we were given a short safety briefing.
The full-day rock climbing experience price included pick up and drop off at your hotel in the Ao Nang with lunch and everything else listed below:
07.30- 08.00 Hotel pick up
08.30 Arrive at Real Rocks Climbing shop for check-in and gear fitting
Transfer by taxi and long tail boat to Railay Beach - 10 minutes
09.00-13.00 Rock climbing on the beach
14:00-17:30 Afternoon rock climbing session followed by caving and abseiling from the most beautiful Railay viewpoint
17.30 Return to shop by long tail boat, return gear, end of full day climbing activity
In no time at all we were climbing up Real Rocks!
We started on small low climbs and before long we were climbing really high up.
Safety Briefing covered:
A basic introduction to top rope sport rock climbing.
A basic introduction to simple belay and rappel techniques.
Basic outdoor climbing safety measures.
How to use rock climbing equipment.
Basic climbing top rope movement and holding techniques.
The limestone formations are absolutely stunning, and the best part about was we were in the shade so we stayed cool.
This rock climbing experience is for beginner and intermediate climbers. We have climbed many times on indoor walls but this was our first time on Real Rocks! Our Instructor started by doing the belaying and showing us how to do it then we belayed for each other.
We got to try six different routes- ranging from novice to intermediate.
Our Instructor was kind, professional, helpful and encouraging!
The views while climbing were amazing! Some climbers felt comfortable enough to take their mobile phones up with them and take snaps from the top.
We spent all morning climbing and belaying for each other.
After lunch we made our way up to the Bat Cave on Phra Nang Beach, this is where you will need your own shoes, not flip flops. After a short hike through the jungle, we arrived at the entrance to the Bat Cave.
Our guide provided us with head torches so we could climb up the bamboo ladder in the dark.
We stopped at the first viewpoint where we had to crawl along a short tunnel to see out. The view was stunning!
The best part of the whole day was climbing right up inside the Bat Cave and then looking out over the most beautiful viewpoint of Railay West Beach.
The excitement continued as we abseiled down from a small opening, Mum and Dad had a go at this part too! We then took a short hike through the jungle and saw some amazing limestone rock features. We ended up on Railay West Beach where, for us, it was time to say goodbye to our guide and thank him for making the whole day so much fun.
If you came over from the mainland, you will travel back with your guide by long tail boat and be dropped off back at your accommodation. Stop off at Real Rocks Climbing shop where you can buy a souvenir T-shirt.
Rock climbing at Railay with Real Rocks Climbing School was an absolute blast. Our Instructor was so much fun, he was a brilliant mentor who guided us on safety, technique and the thrill of the sport.
Rock climbing was an unforgettable experience and we can't wait to explore even higher peaks and conquer new challenges in the future.
We seriously can’t recommend booking a tour with Real Rocks Climbing School more.
Their Instructors spoke perfect English, were super accommodating and encouraging and overall, everything was extremely professional! There are many different types of tours and experience available.

Read our Blog about the adventurous hike / climb up to The Railay Viewpoint and down to the Princess Lagoon inside a steep Hong here.
The Railay Viewpoint and The Princess Lagoon are always on our itinerary whenever we visit Railay. The viewpoint is one of the best in Railay and the Princess Lagoon is truly a hidden gem.
What To Bring:
Sunscreen (you’ll be in the shade most of the time but just in case)
Comfortable Athletic Clothing
Water
Snacks
Water Shoes / Trainers for hike
Money for extra water and snacks, T-shirt and tips
Remember, no need for rock climbing gear it is included.
Where to stay at Railay Beach
Due to the seclusion and desirability of Railay you can expect to pay a little more here for accommodation than on mainland Krabi. Accommodation options range from budget friendly dorm rooms to luxury resorts. Railay can be budget-friendly in low season as accommodation prices drop significantly, presenting some great deals and excellent values.
We most recently stayed at the Diamond Cave Resort & Spa taking two standard rooms side-by-side, one with a double bed and one with twins beds. The Diamond Cave Resort is mid-range for Railay and offers basic accommodation under a towering limestone cliff. The view from the pool is spectacular.
Prices for food and drink are higher in Railay than elsewhere in Thailand.
